The Bald Eagle Unit System

A complete SI-like system of units, based entirely on the bald eagle.

The SI system has seven base units, named after dead Europeans and abstract physical concepts. The US Customary System has inches, feet, and things that somehow derived from human body parts. Both systems share an obvious flaw: neither is based on a bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus, 🦅).

The Bald Eagle Unit System (BEUS) closes this gap. It is a coherent, complete system of measurement — SI-compatible in structure, clearly superior in symbolism. It distinguishes between realistic units, grounded in actual biological properties of the eagle, and symbolic Freedom Units, which require no further physical justification because they feel like freedom.

Base Units

Like the SI, BEUS has seven fundamental quantities. The SI derives its from cones of light, plutonium atoms, and the length of a platinum-iridium bar kept in Paris. BEUS does better.

Symbol Name Quantity Definition SI value
🦅 wsp Wingspan Length Wingspan of an adult bald eagle 2.03 m
🦅 flf Featherload Mass Weight of an adult female bald eagle 4.74 kg
🦅 sc Screech Time Typical duration of a bald eagle's screech 1.776 s
🦅 lbc Libercurrent Electric current By definition 1.776 A
🦅 eh Eagleheit Temperature Eagle body temperature = 1776 eh ≈ 0.17632 K
🦅 flk Flock Amount of substance Eaglegadro constant ≈ 0.295 mol
🦅 glr Glare Luminous intensity Luminous intensity of the white head plumage under overcast sky 1.776 cd

The time base unit Screech is — for purely physical, in no way political, reasons — defined as:

The number — the founding year of the United States, coincidentally — runs through the entire system as a universal natural constant. This decision is scientifically entirely defensible and has nothing to do with patriotism.

Time: The Eagle Calendar

BEUS defines a complete alternative calendar. Through careful — or at least not entirely accidental — choice of the factors 60 × 30 × 27, a BEUS day approximates the true solar day to within about 86 seconds. This is, admittedly, worse than the SI, but still better than the Julian calendar in its worst years.

Key feature: An Eagle Day has 27 Eagle Hours — three more than an ordinary day. That each Eagle Hour lasts only ≈ 53 minutes is a purely technical detail the BEUS Standards Commission does not consider worth mentioning.

Symbol Name Definition SI value
🦅 sc Screech Base unit 1.776 s
🦅 cll Call 60 🦅 sc 106.56 s (≈ 1 min 47 s)
🦅 hr Eagle Hour 30 🦅 cll 3,196.8 s (≈ 53 min 17 s)
🦅 day Eagle Day 27 🦅 hr 86,313.6 s (≈ 23 h 58 min)
🦅 yr Eagle Year 365 🦅 day 364.6 solar days

The length of an Eagle Day is:

A true solar day has — the daily deviation is . The BEUS day is too short. As the BEUS Standards Commission found this unacceptable (after what was presumably a very brief meeting), the following three-stage correction mechanism was introduced.

The Freedom Leap Mechanism

Stage 1 — The Freedom Screech Leap (every 13 🦅 days)

Every 13 Eagle Days, the accumulated deviation is:

Since 10.54 is not a nice number, and BEUS insists on nice numbers, exactly 10 🦅 cll are silently dropped at the end of every 13th Eagle Day. The remaining under-correction of is delegated to Stage 2.

Stage 2 — The Annual Eagle Correction (yearly)

An 🦅 yr has 365 Eagle Days, i.e. 28 complete 13-day periods plus one remaining day. After 28 corrections and the last remaining day, the residual deviation amounts to:

Since 15.95 is likewise not a nice number, 16 🦅 cll are additionally dropped at the last day of each 🦅 yr. This results in a slight over-correction of per year. The Standards Commission has classified this as "negligible" and closed the minutes shortly thereafter.

Stage 3 — The Century Balance (every 100 🦅 yr)

The annual over-correction of accumulates over a century to . These are corrected by restoring 324 🦅 sc on the last day of the last year of a century:

Residual deviation: per century. This is less than one 🦅 sc every 308 years and has been delegated by the Standards Commission to the next generation.

Summary: Every 13 days, 10 🦅 cll are dropped. At year's end, 16 🦅 cll are dropped. Every 100 years, 324 🦅 sc are restored. Anyone who can memorise this is welcome to keep time.

Mechanics

Speed, Force and Momentum

Symbol Name Type Definition SI value
🦅 wfr Wingfreedom realistic Typical cruising speed of the eagle ≈ 13.9 m/s (50 km/h)
🦅 wgf Wingforce realistic flf × g — weight force of the eagle ≈ 46.5 N
🦅 fdf Freedomforce realistic Grip force of the eagle's talons ≈ 400 N
🦅 wgi Wingimpulse realistic flf × wfr ≈ 65.9 kg·m/s

The 🦅 fdf is the measured grip force of a bald eagle's talons — approximately 8.6× its own body weight. Anyone who considers this excessive has never watched an eagle fishing.

Energy, Power and Torque

Symbol Name Definition SI value
🦅 sj Skyjoule wgf × wsp ≈ 94.4 J
🦅 fsj Freedomjoule fdf × wsp ≈ 812 J
🦅 fx Freedomflux sj / sc ≈ 53.2 W
🦅 ffx Full Freedomflux fsj / sc ≈ 457 W
🦅 wgt Wingtwist wgf × wsp (torque) ≈ 94.4 N·m

Electricity

The electrical BEUS units follow the same definitions as the SI — demonstrating that BEUS does respect established structures, as long as they subordinate themselves to an eagle.

The elementary charge follows directly from the base units:

Symbol Name SI equivalent BEUS definition SI value
🦅 fch Freedomcharge Charge (C) lbc × sc ≈ 3.154 C
🦅 ev Eaglevolt Voltage (V) sj / fch ≈ 29.9 V
🦅 srs Screechsist Resistance (Ω) ev / lbc ≈ 16.9 Ω
🦅 fpc Freedompacitor Capacitance (F) fch / ev ≈ 105 mF
🦅 lcl Libertycoil Inductance (H) srs × sc ≈ 29.9 H
🦅 wfx Wingflux Magnetic flux (Wb) ev × sc ≈ 53.1 Wb

Ohm's Law holds in BEUS unchanged — some laws are universal:

Further Units

Pressure

Symbol Name Type Definition SI value
🦅 wgp Wingpressure realistic wgf / wsp² ≈ 11.3 Pa
🦅 fdp Freedompressure realistic fdf / wsp² ≈ 97 Pa

Density and Frequency

Symbol Name Definition SI value
🦅 wgd Wingdensity flf / wsp³ ≈ 0.566 kg/m³
🦅 shz Screechertz 1 / sc ≈ 0.563 Hz
🦅 bth Beathertz Resting heart rate of the eagle ≈ 1.2 Hz
🦅 lhz Libertywave Broadcast frequency of 96.7 The Eagle (WKGL-FM, Loves Park, IL) 96.7 MHz

Radioactivity

Symbol Name Definition SI value
🦅 glw Glarewave Decays per 🦅 sc ≈ 0.563 Bq

"Glare" — the eagle's piercing stare — as a unit for ionising radiation. The choice has not been further justified.

Temperature

The Eagleheit is an absolute temperature scale — zero at absolute zero, like the Kelvin. The unit size was chosen so that a bald eagle's body temperature falls at exactly . This decision is purely scientific in motivation.

Reference point Celsius Kelvin Eagleheit
Absolute zero −273.15 °C 0 K 0 🦅 eh
Water freezes 0 °C 273.15 K ≈ 1549 🦅 eh
Room temperature 20 °C 293.15 K ≈ 1663 🦅 eh
Eagle body temperature 40 °C 313.15 K 1776 🦅 eh
Water boils 100 °C 373.15 K ≈ 2116 🦅 eh

Everyday temperatures in BEUS therefore comfortably sit in the four-digit range. Water boiling at over 2000 Eagleheit underscores how seriously the system should be taken.

Amount of Substance

Amount of substance in BEUS is measured in Flock (🦅 flk). One Flock contains exactly particles — the so-called Eaglegadro constant:

The Avogadro mole contains particles — nearly four times more than a Flock. What nature is trying to say with this remains the subject of ongoing research.

Unit Particle count Conversion
1 🦅 flk ≈ 0.295 mol
1 mol ≈ 3.39 🦅 flk

Note: A real flock of bald eagles typically has 3–15 individuals. would be an unusually large flock.

Luminous Intensity

The unit of luminous intensity in BEUS is Glare (🦅 glr):

Important note: 🦅 glr (Glare, luminous intensity) must not be confused with 🦅 glw (Glarewave, radioactivity). Both units are called Glare. The BEUS Standards Committee reviewed this overlap at its 4th of July session and unanimously declared it not a problem.

The bald eagle has a visual acuity approximately 4.74× that of a human — which is why 4.74 🦅 glr is already sufficient to identify a rabbit at 3 km. Humans are advised to use more.

Information

Symbol Name Definition SI value
🦅 fbt Featherbit Binary feather decision 1 bit
🦅 fBy Featherbyte 8 🦅 fbt 1 byte

A feather sticks or it flies. That is the fundamental information carrier of BEUS. The 🦅 fbt was chosen as base unit because eagles have no fingers and therefore cannot count to ten — making the decimal system not really an option for them.

BEUS covers all SI domains: mechanics, electricity, magnetism, thermodynamics, radioactivity, and information. All from a single bird. The SI needed the entirety of known physics — and still manages to do without an eagle. An oversight that is hereby corrected.

Conclusion

Of course, this is all just a bit of fun — and BEUS will probably not revolutionise the world of metrology. But it would not be the first time in human history that an incoherent system of units leads to a very real problem. It would therefore not surprise me in the slightest if, in the year 2044, a tech billionaire runs into serious trouble on approach to Mars — because somewhere in his spacecraft's navigation software, a Freedomforce turned out to be rather more than a Newton.

The BEUS Standards Commission accepts no liability for this.
